When I go somewhere, it inspires me to want to start a new save with a team from that place on FM. Sitting on my sun lounger last week was no different. Just in case you missed it on Twitter…
Do you remember the Glenn Hoddle Academy, and the deal it had with Jerez? Señor Hoddle’s vision was to give released youth products (mainly from English clubs) a second chance in football. The Academy saved Jerez from extinction in 2010, and then used the club as the vehicle to give these young, released players the platform to make the step back into their football careers. The most notable graduate of the GH Academy has to be Ikechi Anya, who I’m sure you’ll all know now plays international football for Scotland.
With all that in mind, let me introduce you to Los Chicharreros!
Tenerife have well and truly been a yo-yo club over the last decade, going from La Liga down to the Second Division (tier three in Spain), and they’re currently in Liga Adelante. They’ve had some pretty notable ex-managers in Jorge Valdano, Jupp Heynckes, Javier Clemente, Pepe Mel and Rafa Benítez, with Heynckes leading them to a record 5th place finish in the 1995/96 season of La Liga and a UEFA Cup semi-final the following season. That’s been the pinnacle of their history to date though. Is that all about to change?
The answer is highly unlikely but I’ve taken over and I’ll be giving it my best shot by moulding the club into a new style Glenn Hoddle academy. As is so often the case with FM saves these days, here’s the rules I’ll be abiding by during my save.
- 75% of the first-team squad is from either England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.
- Players brought in from these nations will spend a maximum of 2 seasons at the club, receive game-time and the best possible development, and then be moved on.
- No money will be spent on incoming player transfers, leading to…
- Strive to make a profit on all outgoing player transfers.
The save is only just beginning so the next post will outline pre-season comings and goings, and fingers crossed, the first half of the season! I don’t get much time to play FM these days as you can tell from the name of my blog, so progress will be slow. Give me a shout on Twitter if you’ve got any thoughts or feedback on my enforced rules for the save.
